How To Ask Someone For Their Opinion At Work

Do you sometimes wonder if you sound too formal or informal when asking questions at work? Don't worry, you're not alone!

Let's look at 2 natural-sounding ways you can ask for someone's opinion.

1) "What do you think about...?"

This is semi-formal and is great to use:

  • In team meetings to encourage members to take part.
  • When you’d like others to share their opinions on a proposal or idea.
  • During one-on-one discussions to understand a colleague’s perspective.

However, I don’t recommend using this:

  • In very formal settings.
  • When asking for specific data or factual information.

Let's look at two examples:

  • "What do you think about the new marketing strategy we've proposed?"
  • "What do you think about the plan?"

2) "I’d like to hear your thoughts on..."

This is a more formal way to ask someone for their opinion (without directly asking a question). This phrase is useful to use:

  • In written communications, such as emails or reports, to get detailed feedback.
  • During formal meetings or presentations to encourage others to share their opinions.
  • When talking to senior management or clients.

However, it’s best not to use this:

  • In casual conversations where a less formal approach is better.
  • When you need a quick, direct answer (as this question encourages longer and more thoughtful answers).

Let's see it being used in context:

  • "I’d like to hear your thoughts on the budget proposal for the upcoming quarter."
  • "I’d like to hear your thoughts on our plan to expand into new markets."

I hope you found this email helpful and you can start using these two structures at work straight away.

All the best,

Claire
