What type of leader or manager are you (or would like to be)?

Are you more 'hands-on' or 'hands-off'?

  • A hands-on leader is someone who likes to be directly involved in a project, often working closely with their team.
  • A hands-off leader, on the other hand, is often not directly involved with the project and their team.

There are pros and cons to each style.

For example, a hands-on style can:

โœ” give immediate feedback to team members

โœ” increase support and guidance

โœ˜ result in team members feeling micro-managed if done too much

โœ˜ be time-consuming and increase team members' dependency on you

On the other hand, a hands-off style can:

โœ” empower employees

โœ” increase creativity and skills

โœ˜ result in team members feeling confused and unsupported

โœ˜ have inconsistent performance from employees

Your leadership style may also depend on the situation and your team.

To practise, write your own sentences using 'hands-on' and 'hands-off'.

All the best,

Claire
